Orbital Storage & Transport has been a client of mine for 3 years now. In the initial year, the client invested in a traditional direct mail campaign. Each time the client dropped a postcard, they drew a 0.75% response - netting a $7,000 profit on their mailings.
Culligan Water of Northwest Ohio hired me to create a multi-disciplined advertising/marketing strategy and campaign for them. The client had previously placed 40% of their budget into ValPak type coupon systems, netting less that a fraction of 1% response. I suggested that we divert those funds to doing a specific direct mail campaign to clients who lived in well-water and low-quality water areas. Within three months time, we had recouped the investment in the direct mail campaigns and the client was making a profit!
